Monosist has a unique involvement with the Penang Monorail Masterpan Detail Study staggering one after another from the year 2002 to 2007 with 3 different proponents.
Nevertheless, the team has spent a vast amount of energy, exploring every technical possibilities to produce a workable and effective scheme in a highly sensitive urban context.
Deep in heritage zone in Georgetown (capital of Penang) the urbanscape reflects prominent colonial architectural fabric. Its urban geometry inherited traditional urban pattern which has rather narrow and sharp-turn road geometry .
Thus the design of the Penang Monorail station revolves around the coherent complexity derived from the legacy of colonial urban fabric and the traditional planning of its narrow and winding road geometry.
The objective is to create a highly flexible planning in the building components without losing its principle architectural character and identity through maximizing industrial standardization. It results in creating small parts and components, interchangeable in locations and flexible in connections.
The design is also to create ‘balanced’, harmony in scale and proportion, provoke Interesting architectural dialogue between the old and the new that coexist in a unique and appealing manner.
